China tells students to rethink studying in the Philippines over safety concerns

China’s Ministry of Education has issued a fresh alert urging students to reconsider plans to study in the Philippines, citing a recent surge in crimes and instability that particularly affect Chinese nationals.

This is the second study abroad warning from the ministry for 2025. The advisory, released Friday, underscores growing concerns over safety, especially in light of “frequent” incidents involving Chinese citizens and businesses reportedly being harassed or inspected by local authorities.

“The security situation in the Philippines has been unstable recently,” the ministry warned, advising students to “carefully assess safety risks” and stay vigilant.

An earlier statement from the Chinese Embassy in Manila, dated April 1, also pointed to “heightened security risks” following a rise in political protests and demonstrations. Chinese nationals and institutions were advised to minimize unnecessary outings and avoid crowded or politically charged areas.

The embassy further urged Chinese citizens to stay updated on local security developments, boost emergency preparedness, and steer clear of scams or other traps. Travelers were reminded to strictly observe Philippine laws and exercise caution when making travel or study decisions.
