Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson has announced his intention to run for a Senate seat in the upcoming 2025 midterm elections. The decision comes after receiving an endorsement from former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Singson, in a statement posted on Facebook, expressed his gratitude for Duterte’s support, saying it was an honor to be endorsed by the former president. He shared that he sought permission from his family before making the final decision to run.
Singson previously ran for the Senate in 2007, describing his candidacy as a “fight” against the family of his former friend, ex-president Joseph Estrada, but he was unsuccessful. In 2021, Singson joined the Nationalist People’s Coalition while serving as mayor of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, although he did not seek any public office in the 2022 elections.
Duterte has reportedly pledged his support to Singson if he decides to pursue a Senate seat in the 2025 elections.
