Thousands of elderly Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are set to benefit from Republic Act (RA) No. 11982, also known as the Expanded Centenarian Act, which will be fully implemented in 2025. The law grants cash gifts to Filipino senior citizens marking significant milestones in their lives, with benefits starting at age 80.
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), in collaboration with the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC) and other government agencies, signed the 2024 Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) No. 1 on November 27 in Quezon City. The agreement outlines the efficient distribution of benefits to qualified Filipino octogenarians, nonagenarians, and centenarians, including those living abroad.
Under the expanded law, senior citizens will receive PHP10,000 for their 80th, 85th, 90th, and 95th birthdays, while centenarians will continue to receive PHP100,000. The initiative, signed into law by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. earlier this year, aims to celebrate and support the contributions of senior Filipinos.
To ensure efficient distribution, the Elderly Data Management System will be utilized, providing a digital platform for tracking and assisting beneficiaries worldwide. This system is part of the DMW’s Elder Living System program, which addresses the unique challenges faced by elderly OFWs and their families.
DMW Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi highlighted the importance of recognizing senior OFWs for their sacrifices and contributions, saying they serve as inspirations for future generations.
The DMW pledged to collaborate with the NCSC and other agencies to ensure the seamless implementation of the program globally, reinforcing its commitment to prioritize elderly OFWs in its 10-Point Agenda.
