One of the world’s leading cruise tour operators, Carnival Cruise Line, is set to hire thousands of new staff for its three additional cruise ships, with a significant focus on Filipino workers. The company is also offering scholarships to Filipinos eager to join its workforce.
Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, is currently in the Philippines to strengthen the company’s partnership with two Philippine colleges, STI and the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA), which have been key providers of cruise seafarers for the company.
“We’re visiting STI and awarding some scholarships. We’re also expanding the work with PMMA because these initiatives create even better opportunities for Filipino employees who join us, historically in more entry-level roles, by providing an expanded curriculum,” Duffy shared in an interview with ANC.
Duffy emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing training programs. “We’re giving these schools the content and training so that our Filipino crew can join in deck and engine roles, as well as hotel and hospitality programs,” she added.
Last week, Carnival Cruise Line announced the acquisition of three new ships, each capable of carrying up to 8,000 passengers. Additionally, the company is integrating its P&O Cruises Australia brand into the Carnival Cruise Line fleet.
“Come January 2025, we’ll be taking on an additional two ships, followed by another ship in 2027, and further additions in 2028, 2029, 2031, and 2033,” Duffy said.
With 12,000 Filipino crew members currently working for Carnival Cruise Line and about 50,000 Filipino crew members across Carnival Corporation’s eight brands, the company’s expansion presents a significant employment opportunity for Filipinos.
Duffy also highlighted the company’s success, noting that Carnival Cruise ships are fully booked and 2024 has been a record year. “Demand is quite strong,” she concluded.
