Carlos Yulo’s mother denies financial mismanagement accusations post-Olympic win

Carlos Yulo has been the center of attention since winning the gold medal in the men’s gymnastics floor exercise at the Paris Olympics on August 3, 2024. However, scrutiny of his personal life has surfaced, particularly regarding his relationship with his mother, Angelica Poquiz Yulo.

Amidst rumors of financial disputes, netizens accused Angelica of being financially exploitative, with claims suggesting she mismanaged Carlos’ earnings from various competitions. In response, Angelica granted an interview to Bombo Radyo, uploaded on their Facebook page on August 4, to address these allegations.

Angelica clarified the situation regarding Carlos’ bank accounts, stating in a PEP report, “Although I had possession of his bank passbook, I never considered it my own money.” She explained that Carlos filed an affidavit of loss to acquire a new passbook, a move she hadn’t anticipated. “Since hawak ko yung passbook niya, nagpasa siya ng affidavit of loss. Got it notarized tapos pinasa niya sa BDO,” she said, emphasizing that Carlos had every right to access his money.

Angelica also mentioned that Carlos withdrew his PHP11 million from BDO without any deductions, disproving claims of family exploitation. She provided details about the management of another account at Land Bank of the Philippines, where Carlos’ allowance from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) was deposited. “Maraming withdrawals sa Land Bank niya na ATM. So, hawak ko yung ATM niya na dun pumapasok yung allowance niya from 2013 to 2022,” Angelica noted.

Angelica retained all transaction receipts and deposit slips, ensuring transparency. She stated, “Meron akong proof, nandito sa phone ko, nasa akin. Meron mga resibo din na kinuhanan ko siya ng BDO Life niya, na nabayaran ko na siya bago pa mag-advance payment. Even the Sun Life na dalawa yung insurance niya.”

She expressed her concern for Carlos’ future, saying, “So, sa akin binigay. Ang ginawa ko, nararamdaman ko bilang ina, ang sabi ko, baka maubos yung anak ko in the future. So, ang ginawa ko, inano ko siya, dineposit ko siya under my name sa BPI dito sa Vito Cruz.”

Addressing the root of their conflict, Angelica pointed to Carlos’ girlfriend, Filipino-Australian vlogger Chloe Anjeleigh San Jose, as a significant factor in their strained relationship. “Ang naging mitsa lang naman talaga ever since yung babae talaga. Lalong lumaki [ang hidwaan],” Angelica said, highlighting the family’s emotional struggle.

In conclusion, Angelica emphasized, “Wala kaming ninakaw, wala kaming ginalaw na pera niya. Siguro meron portion na hindi man lang sabihin mong aaray yung bulsa niya.” Despite the allegations, Angelica’s primary concern remains Carlos’ well-being and future.
