The Philippine Sportswriters’ Association (PSA) has named Carlos Yulo its top achiever for August 2024, following his historic performance at the Paris Olympics. Yulo, a two-time world gymnastics champion, made the nation proud by winning two gold medals in the floor exercise (15.000) and vault (15.116) events. His remarkable feat earned him a place among the greatest Filipino Olympians, as the first Filipino to win two gold medals in a single Olympiad.
Yulo’s triumph highlighted the best-ever showing for Team Philippines in Olympic history, surpassing previous achievements and joining weightlifting icon Hidilyn Diaz, who won the country’s first Olympic gold in 2021.
In addition to Yulo, the PSA also recognized the achievements of boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas, who brought home bronze medals in the women’s 57kg and 50kg categories. Other Filipino athletes, including golfer Rianne Malixi, obstacle course racer Precious Cabuya, and wushu athlete Jones Inso Llabre, were also celebrated for their international victories in August.
