Carlos Yulo’s stellar performance in the Paris Olympics, where he clinched two gold medals, has earned him the prestigious 2024 Athlete of the Year title from the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA). Yulo will be honored during the PSA Awards Night on January 27, 2024, at the Centennial Hall of the Manila Hotel.
The 24-year-old gymnast’s historic feat—winning gold in both the men’s floor exercise and vault events—makes him the first Filipino athlete to achieve this milestone in the Olympics. His achievement is a fitting celebration of the Philippines’ 100th year of participation in the Summer Games.
“Carlos Yulo’s outstanding performance has brought Philippine sports to greater heights. We are proud to recognize his achievements with our highest honor,” said PSA president Nelson Beltran.
Yulo’s Olympic victories not only marked his redemption after a disappointing finish in Tokyo 2020 but also solidified his status as one of the greatest Filipino athletes. His gold-winning routines outclassed some of the best gymnasts in the world, including reigning floor exercise champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel and vault finalist Arthur Davtyan of Armenia.
The PSA Awards Night, supported by major sponsors like San Miguel Corporation, MILO, and PLDT/Smart, will also recognize other notable athletes, organizations, and sports figures for their contributions to Philippine sports.
