Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly preparing to announce his resignation this week, according to The Globe and Mail. The move comes as internal dissatisfaction grows within his Liberal Party, three anonymous sources familiar with the matter told the publication.
The announcement could be made as early as Monday, ahead of the national Liberal Party caucus meeting on Wednesday, the sources indicated.
It remains uncertain whether Trudeau will serve in an interim capacity while the party seeks a new leader, the report noted.
Trudeau first rose to power in 2015, leading the Liberals to victory in two subsequent elections in 2019 and 2021. However, recent polls show him trailing opposition leader Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party by 20 percentage points.
