Building a safe space for Filipino families raising neurodivergent children in the UAE

For many Filipino families in the UAE, navigating life with neurodivergent children can feel overwhelming and isolating. But thanks to a growing community built on compassion, understanding, and shared experiences, hope is never too far away. At the heart of this movement is AUsome Family Journey (AFJ)—a support group founded by Pamela Amor Calinog, which has become a lifeline for families caring for children with Autism, ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and most recently, Down Syndrome.

What started as a deeply personal mission for Pamela has grown into a thriving platform of support, education, and inclusion, turning her family’s challenges into a meaningful advocacy.

A mother’s journey of resilience

The journey began when Pamela’s eldest son, Daniel, was diagnosed with Global Developmental Delay (GDD) at just two years old and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at six. Fueled by love and a desire to better understand his needs, Pamela pursued studies in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), later working as an ABA Therapist and Learning Support Assistant (LSA) in the UAE.

But the challenges didn’t stop there. Her second son, Dave, was later diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), testing Pamela’s strength and patience through difficult behavioral struggles. Eventually, signs of ADHD emerged in her youngest daughter, Dawn, but by then, Pamela and her husband had learned the importance of early intervention and a strong support system.

“We often feel like we have to be superhuman for our children, but the truth is, we’re just doing our best in the hardest circumstances,” Pamela shares. “And that’s enough.”

Turning struggles into a community of support

In February 2023, Pamela founded AUsome Family Journey (AFJ)—a space where Filipino families raising neurodivergent children in the UAE could find belonging, guidance, and empowerment. What began as a small online group has now blossomed into a dynamic community hosting meaningful programs like:

Therapy Talks, equipping parents with knowledge on neurodevelopmental conditions.
Espresso Yourself, safe spaces where mothers can share their hardships without judgment.
Colors of Determination, an arts program allowing children to creatively express themselves.
Palarong AUsome, sports activities that promote inclusion for children of all abilities.

In addition to supporting children with autism, AFJ has expanded its programs to include children with Down Syndrome, officially starting activities for them this year. A special event dedicated to children with Down Syndrome is scheduled for March 16, marking the beginning of AFJ’s efforts to support this community as well.

The power of community

Behind every successful AFJ event are the hardworking AFJ officers, volunteers, and dedicated parents who continue to believe in Pamela’s mission. Their unwavering support and commitment have been key to the ongoing growth of AFJ, helping make every project and activity possible.

Further extending her advocacy, Pamela also launched Inclusive Connections Enterprises (ICE), providing fellow AFJ parents with livelihood opportunities through event organizing, product customization, and online sales—without the burden of securing business licenses.

Pamela also proudly serves as a Brand Ambassador for Hidden Disabilities Sunflower UAE, promoting awareness for invisible disabilities and helping build more inclusive and understanding public spaces.

As an important note, “Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is exclusively represented by Topland, and Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyards are manufactured by People of Determination at Zayed Higher Organization Abu Dhabi.”

Topland and Zayed Higher Organization are the official organizations behind the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program in the Middle East, which is part of a global initiative supporting individuals with hidden disabilities through increased visibility and understanding in public spaces.

A message of hope

The journey has not been easy. Behind the success of AFJ are countless moments of doubt, exhaustion, and emotional battles. But through it all, Pamela Amor Calinog has turned pain into purpose.

“Our family’s challenges became the foundation of something beautiful,” Pamela says. “AFJ isn’t just a community. It’s a reminder that no parent has to feel alone. Together, we can create a world where neurodivergent children, including those with Down Syndrome, are embraced, understood, and given every chance to shine.”

As AFJ prepares to celebrate its second anniversary during Autism Awareness Month, along with its growing list of inclusive programs, Pamela and her team continue their mission of building a future where acceptance is not the exception—but the norm.

Because in this community, every child matters. Every story counts. And no journey is ever taken alone.
