A highly respected electrical engineer, entrepreneur, media personality, and community leader in Canada, he has built a career defined by technical excellence, leadership, and service. At 53, Danny Mahinay Baliad has nearly two decades of experience abroad, earning recognition in both Canada and his home country, the Philippines.
Currently serving as an Electrical Engineer at the University of Saskatchewan’s Campus Engineering and Sustainability department, Danny plays a vital role in the planning, design, and construction of campus-wide electrical infrastructure projects. “My responsibilities include ensuring that the electrical systems meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency, managing project timelines, coordinating with various departments, and overseeing budgets,” he shares with The Global Filipino Magazine.

Danny’s professional journey is a story of perseverance and ambition. He holds a Master of Science in Management Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Adamson University in Manila. His credentials are impressive—he is a licensed Professional Engineer in multiple Canadian provinces, including Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as in the State of Nevada, USA. He also holds international titles such as APEC Engineer and International Professional Engineer, registered with Engineers Canada.
His journey abroad began in 2006 when he and his family immigrated to Canada in search of better opportunities. His first overseas role as a Building Manager in Toronto was a significant transition from his engineering background, but it laid the groundwork for his eventual success. “I oversaw maintenance in a 300-unit high-rise building, which was different from my field but a necessary step to establish myself in a new country,” he recalls.
His breakthrough came in 2012 when he led a team of over 15 electrical engineers, designers, and drafters on a $4.1 billion, 2.8 million-tonne-per-year potash solution mine project in Saskatchewan—one of the largest projects of its kind at the time. “Managing such a high-caliber team in a globally known multi-discipline engineering consulting firm was a defining moment in my career,” he says.
Danny’s contributions to the engineering profession have earned him numerous accolades. In 2019, he was honored as the Most Outstanding Alumnus in Engineering by Adamson University. He achieved the prestigious title of Senior Member of IEEE, the highest grade available for significant contributions to the field. In 2025, he reached another milestone by being named a Fellow of Engineers Canada (FEC), a rare honor granted to only two Filipino engineers in Canada.
Beyond engineering: A passion for media and community service
While engineering remains at the core of Danny’s career, his passion extends beyond his profession. He is the President and Chairman of PRIMECom Corporation, a media company that produces popular TV programs such as SK Asian Connection, Pinoy Konek, WoW Pinoy, and Umaga@Canada. “Being a TV host on WoW Pinoy allows me to highlight Filipino culture and achievements in Canada,” he explains.

His leadership extends into community service as well. He serves as Chairman of the Board for the Saskatchewan International Film Festival (SIFF) and Bayanihan Community Services, both of which promote arts, culture, and recognition for Filipino talents. As a director of Saskatoon Folkfest, he also supports cultural education and scholarships.
Alongside his wife, Liza, Danny is committed to humanitarian efforts. “We actively support organizations such as SOS Children’s Village in the Philippines and the Bayanihan Foundation Canada, which provides relief goods to communities in need,” he shares. His volunteer work with the Knights of Columbus Council 11429 further reflects his dedication to service.
Danny’s decision to leave the Philippines was rooted in his desire for professional growth and a better future for his family. “I wanted to work on large-scale, cutting-edge projects that weren’t readily available in my home country,” he says. His move to Canada not only expanded his career but also enabled him to earn international recognition and credentials.
However, the transition was far from easy. “Adjusting to the extreme winters in Canada, learning the nuances of Canadian English, and navigating a new financial and healthcare system were major hurdles,” he recalls. Finding employment as an immigrant was another challenge. “Even with my experience, I had to start at an entry-level position to gain Canadian work experience. It was a humbling process.”
Danny credits his resilience, continuous learning, and a strong support system for helping him succeed. “My family was my biggest source of strength. I also found guidance from Filipino professionals who had paved the way before me,” he shares. One such mentor was his former manager, Trodhie Irlandez, P.Eng, FEC, whose career achievements inspired Danny to keep striving.
The rewards of an overseas career
Despite the struggles, Danny finds immense fulfillment in working abroad. “I appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with professionals from diverse backgrounds. The exposure to advanced technology and large-scale projects has elevated my skills and knowledge,” he notes.
His entrepreneurial ventures, including his own Design and Consulting Company, have allowed him to merge his engineering expertise with his passion for media and leadership. “Working abroad has enabled me to give back, not just professionally but also through community service and humanitarian efforts,” he adds.
Looking ahead, Danny envisions using his international experience to contribute to the Philippines’ engineering industry. “I plan to establish a consultancy firm that will provide innovative and sustainable engineering solutions tailored to the needs of the local market,” he reveals.
Education remains close to his heart. “I aim to launch scholarship programs and technical training workshops for underprivileged students in the Philippines. STEM education is vital for the country’s growth,” he emphasizes. His advocacy also includes environmental sustainability. “I want to work with local organizations to promote renewable energy, energy-efficient buildings, and eco-friendly infrastructure.”
Additionally, Danny intends to continue his community service efforts. “Through Bayanihan Foundation Canada, I will remain active in humanitarian aid and cultural preservation initiatives,” he says. He also looks forward to spending more quality time with his family while supporting causes he deeply cares about.
Having overcome numerous challenges, Danny offers valuable advice to fellow Filipinos working overseas. “Always stay connected with your loved ones. Open communication is key in maintaining strong relationships,” he advises.
Financial discipline is also crucial. “Create a budget, save diligently, and avoid unnecessary debt. Seek advice from financial experts and fellow Filipinos who have successfully managed their finances abroad,” he suggests.
For those seeking employment overseas, persistence is vital. “Don’t be discouraged by initial setbacks. Build your network, tailor your resume to local job markets, and take opportunities to learn and grow professionally,” he recommends.
Finally, he stresses the importance of self-care. “Living abroad can be overwhelming, so prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Find activities that bring you joy, stay connected with your community, and never hesitate to seek support when needed.”
