Bicolano student wins gold at global math olympiad in China

A sixth-grade student from Nabua Central Pilot School (NCPS) in Camarines Sur has once again showcased his mathematical brilliance on the global stage. Kiefer Maverick Pasion bagged the coveted Gold Medal at the prestigious World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO) Final 2024, held from January 4 to 5, 2025, in Shenzhen, China.

The WIMO is an invitation-only competition that gathers elite mathematics students from across the globe. This year’s event saw participation from countries including India, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Pasion’s latest triumph is a continuation of his impressive winning streak. Prior to his gold medal at WIMO, he had already secured two Gold Awards in other esteemed international competitions: the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Mathematical Olympiad (Big Bay Bei Final) and the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO Final). He also earned accolades in the Hong Kong International Mathematical Olympiad Final (HKIMO Final).

The WIMO Final is designed to provide participants with exposure to advanced topics from the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). It includes both a high-level competition and workshops aimed at enhancing mathematical aptitude. Participants also benefit from a 10-hour intensive training session led by professional Mathematical Olympiad trainers. Topics covered include Logical Thinking, Arithmetic/Algebra, Number Theory, Geometry, and Combinatorics.

This year, the event was hosted at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHKSZ).

Nabua Central Pilot School celebrated Pasion’s victory with pride, describing him as a “Mathematics Wizard.”
