An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) and architect from Albay, based in Dubai since 2007, has recently made her mark on the UAE’s art scene. Active in exhibitions and live painting events, Fabia’s unique Barbie-themed painting earned her a spot among 800 applicants to represent the Philippines at the UNESCO-backed Art Connects Women (ACW) program in Dubai. This prestigious event, organized by ZeeArts Gallery, took place from March 5 to March 8, 2024, at the luxurious One & Only Royal Mirage-Dubai, featuring 108 women artists from 108 countries.
The ACW exhibition, held under the esteemed patronage of UNESCO, aligns with International Women’s Day’s spirit, aiming to empower women in the art sector and showcase their talents on a global stage. During the four-day event, artists from various cultures and backgrounds had the opportunity to display their creativity, network, and discuss important themes such as breaking barriers and building bridges in creativity and financial inclusion.
Fabia, who donned a traditional terno gown for the occasion, shared that her painting reflects on modern society’s pressures to adhere to unrealistic beauty standards, likening it to a “modern-day Barbieland.” Her participation in ACW not only highlights her artistic prowess but also brings pride to the Philippines.
The event also featured a conference and cultural tour, adding depth to the artistic experience and facilitating cross-cultural exchange. Fabia’s work, along with that of her fellow artists, has been immortalized in the fifth volume of the annual Art Book, “Women Artists around the World,” ensuring their legacy for future generations.
