First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos made a heartfelt homecoming to Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac, Ilocos Norte over the weekend as she stood before the 3,243-strong graduating class as guest of honor at the school’s 47th commencement exercises.
The visit held special meaning for Araneta-Marcos, who once served as a law professor and assistant dean at the university’s College of Law from 2018 to 2020. “It was truly heartwarming to return to Mariano Marcos State University — this time not as a law professor, but as the guest speaker,” she said during her address.
In her message, the First Lady praised the graduates and urged them to stay grounded in service. “You are the future we believe in — and I know you’ll go on to do amazing things,” she said, encouraging them to contribute meaningfully to the lives of Filipinos, especially those in marginalized sectors.
She emphasized humility and lifelong learning, reminding graduates to remain open to guidance. “There’s no shame in asking for advice from experts. There is no shame in asking for help from others,” she said.
Highlighting the power of small but sincere efforts, she added, “What you do doesn’t have to be grand. Even the smallest act of kindness can spark change.”
The event also marked a special recognition for the First Lady, who was awarded an honorary doctorate by MMSU for her contributions to law, education, cultural advocacy, and rural community development.
