Baby’s mid-air emergency sparks outpouring of praise for heroic flight crew

A mother’s emotional Facebook post detailing how AirAsia staff saved her young daughter mid-flight has gone viral, garnering over 233,000 reactions, 43,000 shares, and more than 1,000 heartfelt comments from users around the world.

Jacyntha Florentius, a registered nurse based in the UK and Malaysia, took to social media to express her deep gratitude to the AirAsia crew who responded swiftly and compassionately when her 1-year-and-7-month-old daughter, Natashya Sofea, suddenly became unresponsive during a flight from Guangzhou to Kuala Lumpur on July 4, 2026.

Florentius recalled how her daughter had woken up from sleep mid-air and began acting strangely—first crying, then falling silent with a pale face, cold limbs, and difficulty breathing. “She looked like she was struggling to breathe, weak, and not very responsive,” she wrote.

Panicked but composed, Florentius asked the cabin crew for oxygen. The flight staff promptly administered it, which helped stabilize the child. An onboard medical announcement was made, and a doctor fortunately responded and checked on the child immediately.

“The crew also spoke with the pilot to ask if the altitude could be lowered a little, and the pilot acted swiftly,” she added. Natashya gradually stabilized, but the captain still opted to divert the plane to Ho Chi Minh City for urgent medical attention.

On the ground, a medical team was already waiting on standby. The mother recounted how AirAsia ground staff Alan Vuu accompanied them to the hospital, where her daughter underwent ECG, echocardiogram, and X-ray tests with no delay. The medical report later confirmed the baby had suffered from altitude sickness.

AirAsia also provided the family with a complimentary return flight to Kuala Lumpur, with staff assisting them all the way to the boarding gate.

Florentius specifically commended seven individuals for their exceptional service, including Captain Sangeran Surendran, SFO Muhammad Syafiq bin Nor’en, SCC Mohd Ridzwan Ong, and cabin crew members Stephenie Unyang Dungo, Nurul Nasuha Binti Mohd Maznan, Amirul Ariffin Bin Junaidi, and ground staff Alan Vuu.

Social media users have flooded the post with praise. “Reading this appreciation post in the early morning really boosts my motivation for the rest of the day,” commented Noriah Sukor. Another commenter, Siti Zai, wrote, “I’m crying while reading this post… crying of happiness.”

Many parents also empathized with the mother’s fear. “As a mum, this gives me a vote of confidence in AirAsia,” said Banu Jane van Zanten.

A user named Madrid confirmed the flight diversion, writing, “No wonder AirAsia was awarded best low-cost airline 16 years running. So proud of the crews and staff involved!”

Victor William echoed the sentiment, saying, “Cabin crew are trained to handle emergency situations. That is their primary role—safety of passengers in the aircraft.”
