A 10-month-old baby in Peru swallowed a crucifix, necessitating an urgent medical procedure to ensure her safety. The incident occurred in La Libertad, and the child was treated at Victor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital on Saturday, November 11.
X-ray images revealed the crucifix lodged in the child’s esophagus, posing a significant health risk. The baby’s mother, Maricarmen Sajami Rosas, noticed her daughter’s discomfort and acted promptly, taking her to the hospital where the medical team discovered the foreign object.
Luis Esteves Cabanillas, the doctor who led the child’s surgery, described the procedure as “very complicated.” He explained, “The crucifix was lodged in the upper third of the esophagus. We tried several times to remove it as it was jammed in. Eventually, I managed to pull the foreign body out.”
Rosas expressed her profound gratitude to the medical staff, saying, “I thank the doctors who miraculously saved my daughter. It’s like starting over; it’s a gift, a blessing, a miracle.”
The child has since recovered and is reported to be in good health.
