In an effort to curb the rise of begging activities during the Holy Month of Ramadan, Dubai Police disclosed the outcomes of its annual anti-begging campaign. Over the past four years, a total of 1,701 beggars were apprehended, with 499 detained in 2023, 318 in 2022, 458 in 2021, and 426 in 2020.
During a press conference convened by the General Department of Criminal Investigation at Dubai Police headquarters, it was revealed that 99% of those arrested viewed begging as a profession. The campaign also highlighted instances of visitors exploiting their stay, including a foreign woman who entered the UAE on a tourist visa in pursuit of a wealthy husband. Additionally, another woman was found guilty of exploiting her child for begging purposes, possessing Dhs30,000.
Furthermore, an Asian woman was caught in possession of Dhs60,000, allegedly amassed through begging activities.
