Former Philippine President and recently ousted Deputy Speaker, Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, has affirmed her continued support for the leadership of the House of Representatives following her removal from the position. Despite her absence abroad during the signing of House Resolution No. 1414, which is designed to maintain the “integrity and dignity” of the House, Arroyo has expressed her acceptance of the political maneuvering that led to her replacement.
Arroyo, a key figure in the ruling Lakas-CMD party, was displaced as deputy speaker, but she maintains her allegiance to the party’s leadership and the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. She reiterated her commitment to support Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, asserting that she has never engaged in or endorsed any attempts to dislodge Romualdez from his role.
This declaration of solidarity comes in the wake of contentious political dialogue, notably former President Rodrigo Duterte’s critical remarks, which were perceived as undermining the reputation of the House. Despite not being explicitly referenced in House Resolution No. 1414, the resolution is widely understood as a counter to Duterte’s statements.
The House’s reorganization, which included the removal of Arroyo and Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab from their deputy speaker roles, was described by Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel as a “normal proceeding” ensuring that the leadership is cohesive and supportive of the House’s political trajectory.
Rep. Ungab has also acknowledged his removal and has voiced his support for the current administration, citing his extensive experience in Congress and understanding of its internal dynamics and relationships.
