The Aquino family responded to the recent decision by Malacañang to shift the celebration of Ninoy Aquino Day from August 21 to August 23, stating that the change of date does not diminish the legacy of the late senator.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued Executive Order No. 665 on Thursday, delaying the nonworking holiday that marks the 1983 assassination of Sen. Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a prominent critic of Marcos Sr.’s regime. The Palace explained that the adjustment was intended to create a four-day weekend, aligning with National Heroes Day on August 26.
In a statement, the Aquino family emphasized that moving the date of commemoration does not change the fact that Ninoy Aquino died fighting for the country and his sacrifice ignited the revolution that ended the authoritarian rule of Marcos Sr.
