Apple has launched the iPhone 16e, its new budget-friendly smartphone, aiming to capture a larger share of the mid-range market. The device, which abandons the “SE” designation, is priced at $599 (Dh2,599 in the UAE) and is designed to compete with Android rivals.
According to a Reuters report, the iPhone 16e features the powerful A18 chip, also found in the higher-end iPhone 16 models, and will support Apple Intelligence, including ChatGPT integration. Pre-orders begin February 21st in 59 countries, including the US, China, India, and the UAE, with shipping starting February 28th.
This launch comes as Apple anticipates increased sales following a previous dip. The company is betting that AI features, although rolled out gradually, will boost demand. Analysts, however, remain cautiously optimistic. Previous budget models have seen declining revenue shares, but Apple hopes the 16e will attract buyers in markets dominated by Android.
The 16e boasts a 6.1-inch display, a significant upgrade from previous SE models, and features FaceID, replacing the home button.
It also includes a 48-megapixel dual-lens camera system with 2x zoom. Notably, the 16e is the first iPhone with Apple’s in-house C1 modem chip for cellular connectivity, replacing Qualcomm chips. It is also the last iPhone to transition to the USB-C charging port, complying with EU regulations.
