Apple has officially launched its latest operating system, iOS 18, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 (Philippine time). The new update introduces several innovative features, including artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools, improved customization options, and enhanced security measures, and is now available for select iPhone models.
iOS 18 is compatible with the iPhone 11 series and newer models, including iPhone XS, XR, and SE (2nd generation or later). However, the most advanced AI-powered features are exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and the upcoming iPhone 16.
Among the standout features is Apple Intelligence, a generative AI tool designed to assist with writing, image creation, and smarter interactions with Siri. Users can leverage the AI to draft emails, generate social media posts, or summarize lengthy documents. Additionally, Siri has received a contextual search upgrade, allowing for more personalized searches based on displayed content and stored device data.
The Photos app has undergone a redesign, introducing organized collections, smart albums, and an AI-powered “creative stories” feature that generates multimedia presentations from users’ memories. The new “Clean Up” tool enables users to remove unwanted elements from photos without needing third-party apps.
In the Messages app, users now have more options to react with any emoji, schedule texts, and add text effects such as bold or italic formatting. The app also introduces cross-platform compatibility with non-iPhone users, improving media sharing and read receipts through Rich Communication Services.
Other notable features include enhanced security measures, like the ability to lock or hide apps, and the ability to manage spending habits via the Mail app, which now groups receipts and invoices. Maps has also been updated with interactive hiking trails across the U.S., and gaming enthusiasts can enjoy the new Gaming Mode, which minimizes background activity to improve performance.
For those utilizing Apple Cash, Tap to Cash allows users to securely exchange money or add credit and debit cards to their devices by tapping their phones or cards together.
With iOS 18, Apple continues to push the boundaries of mobile technology, integrating AI to enhance user experience and improve productivity across its apps and services.
