Apple declares iPhone 5S obsolete, along with older iMac and iPod Touch models

Apple has officially added the iPhone 5S, the 21.5-inch iMac, and the 6th-generation iPod Touch to its list of obsolete products. This move signifies that these devices, first released in 2013 and 2015 respectively, will no longer receive service or support from Apple stores.

The iPhone 5S, which introduced a fingerprint scanner and boasted double the processing power of its predecessor, the iPhone 5, is now officially retired. This comes alongside the iPhone 5c and iPhone 6 Plus, which were also recently designated as obsolete.

The 6th-generation iPod Touch, launched in 2015, joins its predecessors from the third generation and earlier on the obsolete list. Apple discontinued the iPod Touch line in 2022, marking the end of an era for the iconic music player series.

The 21.5-inch iMac, once a staple for desktop computing, also transitions to obsolete status, joining the 27.5-inch Retina 5K iMacs from 2015.

While the iPhone 5, 6, 6S, and 6S Plus remain on the vintage list, indicating they are out of production but may still receive some servicing, the iPhone 5S and other newly obsolete devices will no longer benefit from any support.

As Apple continues to advance its product line, the iPhone 5S serves as a reminder of a different era in the company’s history, when annual updates were the norm. Now, with the iPhone 15 available and the iPhone 16 on the horizon, the focus shifts to software innovations, including more generative AI features expected in iOS 18, to be unveiled at WWDC 2024.
