‘Anong klaseng nanay to?’: Carlos Yulo’s mother allegedly denies support through Facebook posts

The mother of Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo, Angelica Poquiz Yulo, has allegedly disowned her son through a series of Facebook posts. This development comes just hours after Carlos secured his first gold medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

According to multiple social media posts circulating online, Carlos discovered that his family had spent his earnings as an athlete without his knowledge. These claims have sparked outrage and disbelief among fans and supporters.

On Angelica’s Facebook account, she has shared several posts hinting at her lack of support for Carlos. A few days ago, she shared a Rappler post celebrating Japan’s Shinnosuke Oka, who won the men’s all-around gymnastics gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday. Angelica captioned the post, “Japan pa din talaga! Lakas!” which translates to “Japan still rules! Strong!”

In the comments section, a Facebook user suggested that if Eldrew, Carlos’ sibling and also a gymnast, had competed, a medal would have been a sure win, potentially at the 2028 Olympics. Angelica agreed, stating that she would visit every church if necessary to secure an Olympic medal for Eldrew and her other child, Elaiza.

Unbeknownst to Angelica, just days after these posts, Carlos made history by winning a gold medal for the Philippines, becoming the second Filipino to achieve this feat after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

Further scrutiny of Angelica’s Facebook posts reveals multiple instances of neglect towards Carlos. In one post, she expressed her love for her children, tagging three of them but excluding Carlos.

“I love you already when you were in my tummy and I love you even more when I first laid my eyes on you. No matter how you age, you’re still my forever babies,” she wrote. One commenter noted the exclusion, saying, “Kinulang naman e,” meaning “someone’s missing.” Angelica replied, “Pala desisyon kayo. Di ko ma-tag kasi na-block ko na nga,” which translates to “It’s your decision. I can’t tag him because I’ve blocked him.”

Carlos recent Olympic feat has brought immense pride and celebration to the Philippines. He made history by winning the gold medal in the men’s floor exercise event at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This victory marks the Philippines’ second-ever Olympic gold medal, following Hidilyn Diaz’s triumph in Tokyo.

Carlo’s performance was flawless, earning him a perfect score of 15.000 points.
