Annual breast cancer screening drive returns, aiming to screen over 700 women

Medcare Hospitals & Medical Centres has launched the third edition of its annual breast cancer screening and awareness program, aiming to screen over 700 women throughout October. The month-long initiative, running from October 1 to 31, is spearheaded by Medcare Women & Children Hospital and extends across all Medcare hospitals and clinics, emphasizing the importance of early detection in combating breast cancer.

The campaign offers a screening package that includes a consultation with a specialist and a choice between an ultrasound or mammogram, encouraging women to prioritize their health. Medcare’s efforts focus not only on providing accessible healthcare but also on educating the public about prevention and lifestyle improvements.

“We are delighted to see women respond positively to our educational programs, taking ownership of their health,” said Dr. Ahmed Abdel Hameed, Medical Director at Medcare Women & Children Hospital and Medcare Medical Centers. “Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the UAE, yet it is also one of the most treatable if caught early.”

Last year, 10% of the 504 women screened were found to have “suspicious” abnormalities requiring further investigation. Nearly 30% showed minor benign issues, prompting recommendations for follow-up consultations and biopsies where necessary. These figures highlight the vital role of early detection in preventing more serious health issues.

The program also raises awareness about the growing number of younger women being diagnosed with breast cancer. One such case is that of Jessica Abou Jaoude, who was diagnosed at 30 years old despite having no family history of the disease. “Breast cancer can be detected at any age, even with no prior risk factors,” she shared. “Early detection saved my life, and I encourage all women to overcome their fear and get screened.”

Medcare’s screening package, priced at AED 350, aims to make breast health services accessible to all women, removing financial barriers.
