An American traveler, identified as Anthony Joseph Laurence, 34, was barred from entering the Philippines due to his disrespectful conduct at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, as reported by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Thursday, November 9.
Laurence, who flew in from Thailand last Tuesday, November 7, exhibited rude behavior towards immigration staff when instructed to complete the eTravel online form. The eTravel System, designed to replace traditional paper-based arrival and departure cards, aims to streamline immigration processes at international ports and should be filled out 72 hours before arrival.
Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco noted that Laurence displayed disdain towards the staff and further aggravated the situation by tossing his passport and mobile phone at an officer. A review of his eTravel entry revealed a fictitious Philippine address, incomplete personal details, and the inclusion of offensive language.
Tansingco emphasized the importance of respectful conduct and adherence to established procedures by all individuals. He warned that any deviations from these procedures would be met with strict action. Despite instructions for immigration officers to practice maximum tolerance, Laurence’s actions were deemed excessive, demonstrating disrespect and compromising the efficiency of the system. Tansingco assured that the agency remains committed to ensuring a smooth travel experience for the public.
