Alex Eala poised to make Philippine tennis history with potential top 60 WTA ranking

Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala is on the brink of rewriting history once again as she nears a spot in the world’s top 60 in women’s tennis following her impressive run at the Eastbourne Open.

After a semifinal victory in the WTA 250 tournament, Eala has climbed to No. 56 in the live WTA rankings, according to a report by Tennis 365. This breakthrough places her on track to become the first Filipina to ever reach the top 60 in the global women’s rankings.

The 20-year-old star is set to battle Maya Joint in the tournament final on Saturday night. Should she clinch the championship, Eala could rise even higher to No. 52.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) determines player rankings based on their performance in up to 18 tournaments, awarding points depending on a player’s progression and the event’s tier. A WTA 250 tournament such as the Eastbourne Open offers 250 points to the champion.

Currently ranked No. 74 in the world, Eala’s official ranking update will be reflected by Monday. Her historic climb signals a major milestone not just in her career, but in Philippine sports as well.
