After three rejections, NU architecture student finally lands scholarship that reignites his dreams

For Nevon Genrick Loo, a second-year BS Architecture student at National University (NU) Manila, getting into the Metrobank Foundation-Boysen scholarship program felt like a long shot—especially after facing three previous rejections from other scholarships.

“May part po sa akin na umaasa akong makuha ako since pang-apat ko na po na take ng scholarship. Sinasabi ko sa sarili ko na makukuha ko naman yung time kung kelan ako makakatangaap ng kahit isa man lang na scholarship. Thank God po na natanggap ako sa scholarship na ito. Hanggang ngayon po, hindi ako makapaniwala,” Nevon shared.

Now among the eight new grantees of the four-year scholarship program jointly offered by Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) and Boysen Philippines, Nevon said the opportunity gave him a renewed sense of purpose.

“Nawawalan na po ako ng motivation para sa school but this scholarship gave me the drive to aim higher. Na-shape niya ‘yung mindset ko na may mas mataas na responsibility ako, na mas ayusin ko pa,” he said.

MBFI and Boysen recently awarded scholarships to top-performing second-year architecture students from NU and the University of Santo Tomas. Beyond financial support, the program focuses on nurturing purpose-driven individuals, offering mentoring and equipping sessions built around values of faith, love, and service.

“In the future, kung sakaling magka-firm man o magkatrabaho, I will pay it back po para sa future architects,” Nevon said, already thinking of how to extend the opportunity to others.

MBFI President Aniceto Sobrepeña emphasized the long-term goal of the initiative: “With our scholarship programs, we empower our academically gifted but financially challenged scholars to learn things and skills that will help them get jobs and become productive citizens of our country.”

Since its inception in 2005, the MBFI-Boysen scholarship has supported over 100 architecture students—producing not just graduates but board passers and topnotchers.

NU President Dr. Renato Carlos Ermita, Jr. added, “The scholarship program with Metrobank and Boysen has been very beneficial to our architectural students… it really is contributing to the betterment of the profession.”

For Nevon, it’s more than just a scholarship—it’s a turning point.
