After chaos, calm: UAE experiences respite from torrential rain

Residents of the UAE can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the worst of the recent storm appears to have passed. Following record-breaking rainfall from late Monday through Tuesday night, conditions are expected to improve on Wednesday, April 17.

While the day will remain cloudy with some rainfall in certain areas, the intensity is anticipated to be notably reduced. Partly cloudy skies are forecasted across the region, with cloud cover increasing and rainfall expected primarily over coastal, northern, and eastern areas.

The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology has reported that convective clouds will develop over coastal areas on Wednesday morning, leading to rainfall. These clouds will then move towards Eastern and Northern regions, with a gradual decrease in cloud cover expected by Wednesday noon. Additionally, thunderstorms have now moved away from the country, as indicated by a map provided by Windy.

Humidity levels are expected to rise during the night and into Thursday morning, particularly in internal and coastal areas. Winds will be generally light to moderate, occasionally freshening and leading to blowing dust in some areas. Sea conditions are forecasted to range from moderate to slight by evening in the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea.

The heavy rainfall on April 16, 2024, marked an unprecedented event in recent UAE history. Tragically, one Emirati man lost his life, and the downpour disrupted life across various regions of the country. The Dubai Metro halted operations, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded, while numerous flights were canceled and Dubai International (DXB) airport diverted all inbound flights until conditions improved.

In response to the adverse weather, mosques throughout the UAE issued messages urging Muslims to offer prayers at home as the nation coped with the aftermath of the heavy rains.
