After 24 years, Ramadan observance returns to winter season

For the first time in 24 years, UAE is set to observe the Holy Month of Ramadan during the winter season, marking a significant shift in the fasting schedule for millions of Muslims.

The lunar calendar, which dictates the timing of Ramadan, ensures that the month rotates through different seasons over a 33-year cycle.

In 2024, Ramadan is expected to commence on March 11, aligning with the winter period, which extends from December 21 to March 20.

The Islamic lunar calendar, shorter than the Gregorian calendar by approximately 11 days, causes Ramadan’s start date to advance by 10 to 12 days each year. The crescent moon’s appearance, signaling the beginning and end of Ramadan, is a pivotal aspect of this time. This year, the crescent moon is anticipated to be visible on March 10, the 29th day of the Islamic month of Shaban.

Fasting during the winter offers a more manageable experience, with shorter days and milder temperatures. Dubai residents will begin their fast at 5.15 am and break it at 6.29 pm on the first day of Ramadan, undergoing a fasting period of 13 hours and 14 minutes. This duration will gradually extend as the month progresses. The National Centre of Meteorology predicts pleasant weather, with temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius, enhancing the fasting experience.

Ramadan in Dubai is renowned for its community spirit, particularly evident in the iftar gatherings, where friends and family unite over a meal to break their fast. This year, numerous iftar tents are expected to feature outdoor areas, allowing attendees to enjoy the sunset and cooler evening temperatures. Similarly, Ramadan markets, offering an array of cultural items and delicacies, are set to take place outdoors, fostering a vibrant atmosphere for family-friendly shopping.

The conclusion of Ramadan brings the joyous celebration of Eid Al Fitr, a time marked by festivities, fireworks, and community gatherings. In 2024, the Eid Al Fitr holidays in Dubai are slated to span from April 8 to April 12, promising a nine-day break filled with ideal beach weather, perfect for staycations or regional trips.
