The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) emphasized its non-partisan role and urged to be excluded from political disputes following former President Rodrigo Duterte’s latest remarks targeting President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Speaking at a press briefing, AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla clarified the military’s position, stating, “The AFP is a non-partisan organization. Our Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. has reiterated that our Armed Forces remain united and professional.”
The statement came after Duterte accused Marcos of being a drug addict and called on the military to “protect the Constitution.” Duterte claimed the military is the only institution capable of addressing what he described as a “fractured governance” in the country.
Padilla downplayed the political noise, urging focus on more pressing national issues. “There are many challenges ahead, and we request that discussions not be derailed by circulating noise,” she said, adding that there is no need for loyalty checks within the AFP as soldiers remain committed to their mandate.
“Our loyalty is to the flag and the Constitution, and we adhere to the chain of command,” Padilla concluded.
