Advocacy group finds dangerously high lead levels in water bottles sold in Metro Manila

Advocacy group Ecowaste Coalition revealed that several reusable water bottles sold in Metro Manila and nearby areas contain dangerously high levels of toxic lead. The group reported that some of the bottles, bought from online stores and physical shops, exceeded the government’s limit of 90 parts per million (ppm) for lead in exterior coatings.

In their study conducted from July to October 2024, Ecowaste said that 15 out of 30 reusable steel water bottles had lead levels above the limit. Of these, 10 contained lead levels exceeding 10,000 ppm, with one bottle reaching over 100,000 ppm. These products were sold for P145 to P289.

“It is very disturbing,” Ecowaste noted, emphasizing the risk of lead exposure, especially for children, as the paint on the bottles could wear off with use. The group added, “Lead is toxic if ingested and can cause adverse health problems.”

The group urged the government to enforce lead paint standards and remove non-compliant products from the market, including online sellers. Ecowaste also called for proper labeling to help consumers choose safer products.

While reusable bottles help reduce plastic waste, the group emphasized the importance of compliance with lead standards to prevent health risks.
