Senator Francis Tolentino expressed his satisfaction over the recent victory of house helper Elvira Vergara, who was subjected to abuse by her former employers. Tolentino made the announcement before the session concluded on Tuesday, highlighting Vergara’s triumph in her initial case and the substantial award granted to her by the Department of Labor.
In a statement, Tolentino stated, “Just a short manifestation of good news emanating from this chamber, Mr. President. If you will recall Mr. President, several weeks ago your committee on justice and human rights initiated several investigations concerning the plight of Manang Elvira Vergara, she was blinded by her employer.”
He continued, emphasizing the collaborative efforts within the Senate, “We got good news Mr. President because of the work of the members of the committee including the entire membership of this chamber. Manang Vergara whose tormentors were incarcerated here just won her initial case and was awarded a huge amount by the Department of Labor. Forthcoming Mr. President would be the resolution coming from the Department of Justice.”
Tolentino concluded by affirming the Senate’s commitment to upholding justice, stating, “This just goes to show Mr. President that the Senate is doing its best, that the Senate is still the bastion and bedrock of Philippine justice.”
As of this report, further details regarding the case are not yet available.
