The Automated Rapid Transit (ART) system, a rail-less and eco-friendly transport solution, has begun weekday operations with extended hours, reflecting its growing popularity among commuters, Khaleej Times reported.
Initially launched in October last year, the pilot phase of the ART system connected Reem Mall and Marina Mall, operating only from Friday to Sunday between 10 am and 3 pm. However, the service has now expanded to weekdays, running from Monday to Friday, with the last service extended until 8 pm.
Commuters have welcomed the change, particularly during the harsh summer months. Paul Alfredo, who commutes between Reem Island and Electra Street, noted that the ART service offers a more comfortable and convenient alternative to public buses, especially during peak hours.
The ART system operates on a 27km route, connecting major destinations such as Marina Square, the Galleria Al Maryah Island, Qasr Al Hosn, Khalidiya Park, and several hospitals and hotels in Abu Dhabi. Despite its benefits, some commuters, like Yassin Aref, have pointed out the need for more frequent services, as the current 60-minute interval between ARTs can be inconvenient.
