Abu Dhabi rolls out AI-powered sweepers to keep the city spotless

Abu Dhabi has introduced a fleet of autonomous street sweepers to keep its famous corniche clean, marking another milestone in the emirate’s growing use of smart mobility solutions.

Following the success of robotaxis that have already completed 30,000 trips across Yas Island, Saadiyat, and Masdar City, the new “RoboSweepers” will now take on cleaning and sanitising duties along the city’s major public areas—completely without human intervention. The autonomous cleaning vehicles are part of an initiative led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in partnership with the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council. The project was developed by Autogo, a subsidiary of K2.

Equipped with sensors and advanced navigation systems, each RoboSweeper is capable of detecting obstacles and following precise pre-programmed routes. These machines are designed for use in urban areas such as sidewalks, pedestrian spaces, and public plazas—enhancing hygiene standards while reducing the need for manual labour.

“The RoboSweeper devices represent a leap forward in building future cities, and we remain committed to investing in technologies that support Abu Dhabi’s vision and meet the needs of the community, today and in the future,” said Sean Teo, Managing Director of K2.

The rollout of driverless sweepers adds to Abu Dhabi’s broader push toward autonomous technology, complementing the expansion of self-driving taxis across the capital’s islands and reinforcing its position as a leader in smart city innovation.
