Abu Dhabi Police released footage on Friday showcasing two serious traffic accidents caused by distracted driving, aiming to raise awareness among motorists. Both incidents, caught on camera, underscore the importance of staying vigilant behind the wheel.
In the first accident, a four-wheel drive suddenly stopped in the middle of the road. The driver casually exited the vehicle, leaving the door open. A second car slowed down to avoid a collision, but a third vehicle, unaware of the situation, crashed into both cars at high speed, sending one vehicle into the road barrier.
The second incident occurred during a traffic jam when a vehicle failed to notice the stopped cars ahead and crashed into them, causing a pile-up of at least four vehicles. The accidents, while severe, have not yet reported any injuries.
Authorities reminded drivers not to stop in the middle of the road under any circumstances. Instead, motorists are urged to pull over at the nearest exit or call for help if their vehicle becomes immobile.
Abu Dhabi Police also highlighted that distracted driving carries an Dh800 fine and four black points, while stopping in the middle of the road results in a Dh1,000 fine and six black points. The UAE has reported a 3% increase in traffic fatalities, with 352 road deaths recorded in 2023.
