Abu Dhabi officials say sea worms spotted at Al Bateen Beach are harmless and part of nature

Beachgoers at Abu Dhabi’s Al Bateen Beach were met with an unexpected sight recently, as sea worms made a rare appearance—causing a stir on social media. But authorities have now stepped in to calm any fears.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) confirmed on July 8 that the sea worms are “harmless marine organisms” and pose no threat to the public. According to the agency, these creatures usually live buried in the sand and only surface due to natural environmental changes.

Experts believe the appearance of the worms may be tied to rising sea temperatures, which can influence their behavior and reproductive cycles. While unusual in visibility, their presence is nothing out of the ordinary in the UAE’s diverse coastal environment.

“These organisms play an essential role in the ecosystem,” the EAD explained, adding that they help recycle organic material and serve as a food source for fish, supporting the balance of marine life.

Authorities reassured the public that there is no cause for concern and encouraged everyone to continue enjoying the beach, highlighting that sightings like these are part of the region’s vibrant natural heritage.
