Abu Dhabi authorities have introduced a new traffic rule allowing heavy vehicles to overtake in a designated lane on Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed International Street. Starting from Monday, January 29, 2024, heavy vehicles are permitted to use the second right lane for overtaking purposes only, from Benona Bridge to Ikad Bridge in both directions.
Drivers of heavy vehicles are urged to strictly follow safety guidelines to ensure their safety and the safety of other road users. They must remain in the right lane unless overtaking, check for blind spots in their side mirrors before changing lanes, use signals early, and return to the right lane after overtaking.
This decision aims to enhance traffic safety in the UAE and bolster the logistics transport sector by reducing traffic congestion in the emirate. To enforce this new rule, traffic patrols and smart systems will monitor the road, and penalties will be imposed on those who do not adhere to the overtaking regulations.
