Starting September 1, 2024, Emirati women working in the private sector in Abu Dhabi will benefit from an extended 90-day maternity leave, offering them more time to care for their newborns and adjust to motherhood. This new policy, part of a broader effort to support family growth and stability, aims to align private sector benefits more closely with those in the public sector.
In addition to the extended leave, the initiative provides Emirati mothers the opportunity to apply for financial support to supplement their salaries during their maternity leave. To qualify, mothers must apply within 30 days of their child’s birth and submit necessary documents, such as a salary certificate, bank account details, a family book issued in Abu Dhabi, and a no-objection certificate from their employer.
Dr. Bushra Al Mulla, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Social Support Authority, stated that the initiative aims to promote a healthy and stable environment for raising children, encouraging private companies to adopt this program as part of their corporate social responsibility.
The extended maternity leave is one of several measures under the Emirati Family Growth Support Programme, which will roll out over five years. The program also includes home visit services by the Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority, providing new mothers with guidance and support during the early weeks of motherhood to ensure both maternal well-being and child development.
