A groundbreaking initiative, Sports for Autism, is set to launch in February 2025, aimed at enhancing the physical and mental well-being of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through sports therapy. Spearheaded by Engr. Lilac Schonberg, a Filipina mechatronic robotics engineer, and Miss Ann Misharie David, the owner of Kyros Era Academy, this initiative will debut during the Sports Fest of QAT Blended Learning Education School on January 25-26, 2025, at the International Community School (ICS) in Al Khalidiyah, Abu Dhabi.
Engr. Schonberg, renowned for her pioneering integration of robotics into autism support programs, emphasized the transformative role of physical sports therapy in helping children with ASD. “Physical activity improves not just motor skills but also social interaction, language development, and overall quality of life. Combining these with behavioral therapy creates a holistic approach to autism care,” she shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.
The initiative will incorporate targeted sports therapy designed to build motor skills, muscle strength, balance, and posture while addressing challenges such as coordination and communication difficulties faced by children with ASD. Engr. Schonberg’s Kinesthetic Learning Program and the 16bits Auditory Program have already set a strong foundation for this innovative approach.
“The goal is to provide children with ASD the opportunity to engage in activities that foster physical and social development,” said Miss David. “At Kyros Era Academy, we’ve seen firsthand how sports can transform lives, instilling confidence, discipline, and teamwork in young athletes. We’re proud to extend this to children on the autism spectrum.”
The role of physical therapy in autism
Physical therapy has been identified as a critical intervention for children with ASD, addressing movement challenges and improving overall functionality. According to Engr. Schonberg, “Physical therapists are movement experts. They improve quality of life through hands-on care, patient education, and prescribed movement. For children with ASD, this can mean better coordination, balance, and the ability to engage in social play.”
In collaboration with Sunup Development Center and Thread and Needles Sports, the Sports for Autism campaign will roll out programs across the UAE, offering activities tailored to the unique needs of children with ASD. These programs will be accessible to families, providing guidance and tools for parents to support their children’s development.
Kyros Era Academy, a basketball institution known for fostering growth and discipline, will play a pivotal role in implementing the initiative. The academy’s commitment to nurturing talent through expert coaching and tailored programs aligns with the goals of Sports for Autism.
