Abalos, Pacquiao in tight race for Senate seats as Marcos, Villar lose ground

Senatorial candidates Benhur Abalos Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are in a neck-and-neck battle for the final two Senate slots, based on the latest survey by McHenry & Associates, which placed them at 11th and 12th positions, respectively.

The survey, conducted from May 5 to 7 among 3,700 respondents, showed Abalos with a 33.2 percent support rating, closely trailed by Pacquiao at 33.0 percent. Analysts credit their surge in popularity to their visible grassroots campaigns and reform-oriented messages.

Abalos has garnered recognition for his efforts in government reforms and public safety, while Pacquiao’s widespread appeal remains anchored on his pro-poor advocacy and long-standing celebrity status.

In contrast, other high-profile candidates saw a decline in support. Sen. Imee Marcos, who recently distanced herself from the administration’s senatorial lineup, fell to 17th place with just 25.9 percent backing. Observers suggest that the drop reflects voter discontent within her traditional support base, particularly in the Solid North.

Meanwhile, Las Piñas Rep. Camille Villar slipped to 15th place with 27.2 percent support. The dip is attributed to negative coverage surrounding a water company owned by her family, which has faced criticism over service interruptions and alleged profiteering.

McHenry & Associates noted that the latest results reflect the increasingly unpredictable and personality-driven nature of Philippine politics, where a mix of political dynasties, celebrity figures, and reformists are vying for public favor.
