A Filipino expatriate’s rise from humble beginnings to corporate success in the UAE

At just 35 years old, Jenelyn Datingaling has crafted a life that encapsulates the very essence of perseverance and ambition. With 16 years of living abroad, she’s a testament to the idea that “sacrifice doesn’t mean sufferings,” but rather a tool to empower oneself towards success.

Currently holding the position of a Trade Shopper Marketing Officer at Gulf Electronics Company, Jenelyn’s journey from a sales executive to a key figure in marketing is a story of relentless effort and unwavering determination.

Her career in the UAE began in 2007 when she arrived in Abu Dhabi and took up a role as an admin assistant at Spinneys. Despite the daunting prospect of working abroad without a bachelor’s degree, Jenelyn was uplifted by the support of her cousin, who believed in her talents and skills.

This belief fueled her ascent, leading her to become a product specialist promoting Philips kitchen appliances and personal care products. Her rise didn’t stop there; she transitioned to a Trade Shopper Marketing Officer, engaging with high-level clients and learning strategies to enhance her work.

Jenelyn reflects, “I enjoyed their company during the conference meetings and gained a lot of strategies and approach that I can use in my work.”

Journey of education and empowerment

Jenelyn’s narrative isn’t just about professional growth; it’s deeply interwoven with personal sacrifice and societal challenges. As the eldest of eight siblings, she became the family’s breadwinner at a young age. Her commitment to her family is evident as she worked tirelessly abroad to support their education and well-being. This dedication extended beyond her family, as she engaged in volleyball leagues playing for causes like supporting human trafficking victims in Abu Dhabi.

However, her path wasn’t without its hurdles. Jenelyn faced the harsh realities of discrimination and cultural challenges while striving to secure her place in a competitive environment.

She shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, “I felt being discriminated because of my nationality and as a woman.”

Yet, her response was not of defeat but of resilience and professionalism, treating others with respect regardless of their behavior towards her.

Education remained a beacon of hope for Jenelyn. After passing the UPCAT exam, she enrolled in the University of the Philippines Open University to pursue a Bachelor of Educational Studies. Juggling studies with a full-time job, she relied on her supportive friend, Joie, and her indomitable spirit to keep pushing forward. Her recent graduation is not just a personal achievement but a symbol of her commitment to lifelong learning and her dream of making a positive impact as a teacher.

‘Hold onto your dreams’

Jenelyn’s story is a powerful reminder to her fellow Filipinos and expatriates that struggling is part of the journey, but it’s the resilience and belief in oneself that pave the way to success.

She advises, “Don’t lose hope. Struggling is just part of the process and it is everywhere.”
Her own experiences of overcoming discrimination, financial responsibilities, and educational pursuits are a testament to her advice.

As she looks forward to pursuing further qualifications and her dream of teaching, Jenelyn embodies the very essence of ‘The Global Filipino’ – adaptable, resilient, and ever-forward-looking.
