Filipinos prefer cash as Valentine’s Day gift, survey reveals

In a recent survey released by the Social Weather Station (SWS) on February 11, it was found that money tops the list of desired gifts among Filipinos for Valentine’s Day. The survey, which included responses from 1,200 individuals aged 18 and above from across the country, revealed that 16% of Filipinos prefer cash over other gifts for the romantic holiday.

Following money, love and companionship were preferred by 11% of the respondents, with flowers (10%), apparel (9%), and heartfelt gifts (5%) also ranking high on the list. Participants were asked to identify one gift they would most like to receive from a loved one on Valentine’s Day, leading to a diverse array of desired presents.

Other notable mentions included mobile phones, watches and jewelry, good family relationships, and food and grocery items, each garnering 5% or less in preference. Some respondents also expressed a desire for non-material gifts such as greetings, kisses, or even a wedding.

The survey also explored gender differences in gift preferences, finding that 19% of women favored money, compared to 12% of men. Apparel was a popular choice among 14% of male respondents.

In addition to gift preferences, the survey delved into the state of Filipinos’ love lives, with 58% claiming to be “very happy,” 23% feeling they “could be happier,” and 19% stating they do not have a love life.

Conducted from December 8 to 11, 2023, the survey has a margin of error of ±2.8%.
