Woman leaves AED10 million fortune to her pets after children neglect her in illness

An elderly woman, surnamed Liu, residing in China, has decided to bequeath her substantial 20 million yuan fortune, equivalent to AED10.4 million, to her beloved cats and dogs rather than her own children, who reportedly neglected her during her illness. South China Morning Post reported that Liu initially intended to leave her assets to her three kids upon her demise, but her plans took a drastic turn when they failed to provide her with care during her sickness and only reached out sporadically.

Liu conveyed her reasoning, stating that “only her pet cats and dogs were there for her” during her time of need. Currently, a veterinary clinic has taken charge of her inheritance, ensuring the well-being of her furry companions.

While Liu’s decision may not be legally recognized in the country, as stated by a Will Registration Center official in Beijing, there are alternative options available to address the matter. The official suggested that Liu could have appointed a trusted individual to oversee the veterinary clinic’s operations, ensuring her pets receive proper care.

Another official emphasized that Liu was aware of the potential risks associated with her decision. “We told Auntie Liu that if her children change their attitude towards her, she could always alter her will again,” they mentioned.
