Commute time on this Dubai street slashed by 50% following RTA’s recent roadworks

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully wrapped up the Algeria Street Improvement Project, a vital initiative designed to bolster traffic flow and cater to the booming residential sectors in the vicinity. Spanning a distance of 2 km, the project extends from the juncture of Algeria Street with Al Khawaneej Street (South) and culminates at the intersection with Tunis Street (North), benefiting the neighborhoods of Al Muhaisnah (1) and Al Mizhar (1).

Hamad Al Shehhi, the Director of Roads at the Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA, detailed the project’s scope. It encompassed the expansion of Algeria Street between the intersection near Street 11 by Al Khawaneej Street and the crossing with Tunis Street, along with improvements on Streets 27 and 31. The enhancements include the augmentation of the road from two to three lanes in each direction, effectively increasing its capacity from 6,000 to 9,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.

A notable change is the transformation of an existing roundabout into a signalized junction, facilitating left turns and thus serving the residential areas of Muhaisnah and Al Mizhar more efficiently. Moreover, the project introduced cycling lanes and specific pedestrian zones, extending from Street 11 to Street 27 on the left side of Algeria Street, and from Street 27 to Tunis Street on the right side.

These developments not only elevate the quality of the road but also significantly slash travel times between Al Khawaneej Street and Tunis Street. During peak hours, the travel duration has been halved, plummeting from 15 minutes to a mere 7 minutes.

In addition, the project encompassed the paving of service roads flanking both sides of Algeria Street, ensuring connectivity with the service roads for Streets 27 and 31. It also provided parallel parking spaces for villas on both sides and angle parking near the junctions of Algeria Street with Streets 27 and 31, further streamlining the traffic flow and enhancing the infrastructure to support the rapidly growing communities in the area.
