Long-lost Saudi brothers reunite after 50 years in emotional homecoming

Two brothers from Al Namas, Saudi Arabia, have reunited after a separation that spanned over half a century. Dr. Mudhi Al Shehri, a distinguished physics professor at Kalamazoo University, USA, and his brother Mohammed Al Shehri, shared an emotional embrace, marking the end of a 55-year-long absence.

The story of separation began with the tragic loss of their mother, prompting young Mudhi to move to Riyadh for his high school education. His academic journey led him further away, to the United States, where he pursued and excelled in the field of physics. Despite his professional success, the distance from his homeland and his brother Mohammed weighed heavily on his heart.

Mohammed Al Shehri reminisced about the years of longing since Dr. Mudhi’s departure when he was just a fourth grader. The brothers managed to maintain a fragile connection through social media and cherished family videos. These digital threads of connection recently reignited Dr. Mudhi’s longing to return to his roots.

The catalyst for their reunion was an email from Dr. Mudhi’s nephew, conveying the family’s deep desire to see him. Mohammed Al Amer, a family friend, played a crucial role in bridging the gap between the brothers. His visits to Dr. Mudhi in the U.S., carrying updates and emotional messages from the family, ultimately convinced the professor to undertake the long-awaited journey home.
