Dubai RTA invests AED332 million in Umm Suqeim Street to drastically reduce travel time

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated a significant Dh332 million upgrade for Umm Suqeim Street, aimed at enhancing the road’s capacity and reducing travel time for commuters. The ‘Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project’ stretches 4.6 km from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, linking four key traffic corridors: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road.

A central feature of this project is an 800-meter-long tunnel, featuring four lanes in each direction, expected to boost the street’s capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour both ways. This upgrade will cut down the travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Rd and Al Khail Rd from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes.

The project aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, Ruler of Dubai, to accommodate Dubai’s growing urban and population needs. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, closely monitors the project’s progress.

Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, emphasized the project’s importance in improving connectivity between major transverse and vertical streets in Dubai. He recalled RTA’s earlier efforts in 2013 to widen Umm Suqeim Street and the construction of bridges and pedestrian walkways to enhance road utility.

This latest upgrade includes an enhanced intersection near Kings School, featuring the new tunnel and a signalised surface intersection. The project is expected to benefit the residents of Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills, areas with an estimated population of two million.

The RTA has a track record of successful road improvements in the area, including the initial phase in 2013 and the opening of a central bridge in 2020 as part of the Dubai Hills Mall Project. These enhancements have consistently aimed to ensure smooth traffic flow and improved accessibility for the growing population in Dubai.
