Two of the UAE’s most prominent gaming and raffles draw operators, Mahzooz and Emirates Draw, announced a temporary halt to their activities starting January 1, 2024. The pause, which comes without a specified end date, follows new directives from the UAE Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA), established in September to oversee and regulate the gaming sector.
Why the Pause?
The suspension aligns with the GCGRA’s efforts to establish a well-regulated gaming environment. While Mahzooz refers to this as an “industry-wide mandate,” it remains unclear whether other gaming companies will also pause their operations. Emirates Draw sees this as an opportunity to enhance the gaming experience for their users.
Impact on Ticket Sales and Draws
Mahzooz announced that no draws would occur post-December 30, 2023, pending further notice. Similarly, Emirates Draw has ceased ticket sales after December 31.
What About Customer Funds?
Customers with existing credit balances in e-wallets can request withdrawals. Both companies assure that existing accounts will remain active, and funds will be secure during the pause.
Prize Payouts and Resumption of Draws
Winners of past draws are assured full payment of their prizes. Mahzooz anticipates resuming draws likely in the first quarter of 2024, contingent on regulatory approval. Emirates Draw will provide updates through official channels when it’s appropriate.
Role of the GCGRA
The GCGRA, as reported by the state news agency Wam, is a federal body tasked with establishing a socially responsible gaming environment. Its roles include coordinating regulatory activities, managing licensing, and ensuring compliance with high standards, aiming to responsibly harness the economic potential of commercial gaming.
