For Carlos Yulo, the plan for his eventual wedding to longtime partner Chloe San Jose comes down to a single principle: the day belongs to the two of them and no one else.
Pressed by broadcaster Karen Davila on whether his parents, Angelica and Mark Andrew Yulo, would have a place at the ceremony should he and San Jose marry, the two-time Olympic gold medalist answered without hesitation. “Kasal po namin ‘yun and relationship po namin ‘yun and mas pipiliin kong kami na lang. Ayaw ko din masira ‘yung moment namin para sa amin dapat dalawa. Ayaw ko ‘yun mamantsahan pa, and marami na din silang ginawa na pinatawad ko na. And hanggang d’un na lang din po,” he told her.
The gymnast framed the choice as protecting the mood of an occasion he wants defined by warmth rather than old friction. “So ahm, hindi po. Gusto ko sa amin lang po iyun and I really wanted to be really full of love and joy kapag nangyari po iyun,” he said.
Yulo drew a line between forgiveness and reconciliation. He has let go of the grievances tied to his family, he indicated, but that pardon does not oblige him to reopen a relationship he has deliberately bounded. His position, as he described it to Davila, is that certain matters end where they stand.
The estrangement traces back to the period following his historic run at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he claimed two gold medals in men’s gymnastics. As reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Angelica Yulo publicly blamed San Jose for wedging herself between the athlete and his family, a claim the content creator has rejected. Yulo has separately said the falling-out stemmed from alleged mismanagement of his earnings by his mother, who once handled his finances.
That rift has not thawed on his mother’s side. PhilStar Life noted that Yulo himself has said he carries no anger over the dispute, telling an earlier interviewer he would have no objection to their company if circumstances allowed, though the outcome is not his to control.
The marriage itself is no longer a distant idea. The couple, who have lived together since 2023, told Boy Abunda in March 2026 that they feel no need for either family’s blessing to wed, with San Jose saying the involvement of too many people would only complicate things. Yulo, for his part, remains close with his siblings even as ties with his parents stay severed.
