Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) unveiled a prototype electric bike (e-bike) on Thursday, specifically designed for delivery companies. This initiative is part of Dubai’s broader plan to transition towards eco-friendly, zero-emission transportation options.
Muhannad Khaled Al Muhairi, the Director of Commercial Transport Activities at the RTA’s Licensing Agency, emphasized that the goal is to expand and enhance the scope of commercial transport services while accelerating the shift to non-polluting transportation modes. Al Muhairi highlighted RTA’s collaboration with industry experts in developing a prototype e-bike that suits the unique needs of the delivery business, encouraging companies to adopt green transportation methods.
The plan also includes establishing charging stations across Dubai to support the e-bike infrastructure. Al Muhairi pointed out that switching to e-bikes would reduce operational costs by cutting down on fossil fuel dependence.
These advanced-technology e-bikes are expected to surpass traditional motorcycles in safety, thereby potentially reducing accident rates. While the RTA has not disclosed specific e-bike specifications, the provided image shows that these black and white e-bikes have a step-through frame and smaller wheels, akin to petrol engine-powered scooters with 50cc to 125cc motors. Unlike mopeds, these scooters are equipped with automatic transmissions and come with lights, turn signals, horns, and can reach higher top speeds.
Al Muhairi reiterated the RTA’s commitment to offering effective and sustainable services in line with Dubai Vision 2030’s objective of reducing carbon emissions by 30%.
