Specialists at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) confirmed a diagnosis and started treatment within a single day for a nine-month-old girl who arrived at the facility in critical condition, according to SEHA, the healthcare network that operates the hospital and forms part of PureHealth.
The infant, identified as Sarah, was noticeably pale when her family brought her in. Testing showed an extremely high white blood cell count, a finding that pointed to a rare and serious condition demanding fast treatment to head off severe complications.
Physicians drew on several fields at once to handle the case. Teams from Paediatric Emergency, the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Paediatric Nephrology, and Paediatric Oncology assessed the child together, worked to stabilize her, settled on a diagnosis, and mapped out how to proceed. Therapy began the same day she was admitted.
Dr. Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Consultant Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, described how the girl presented and how staff moved to intervene. “Sarah arrived in a very critical condition, with an extremely high white blood cell count requiring immediate intervention. Thanks to the swift collaboration of our teams, we were able to confirm the diagnosis and begin treatment on the same day. She responded well and is now continuing chemotherapy while progressing according to protocol,” he said.
The hospital pointed to the outcome as a reminder for parents to bring children in as soon as troubling symptoms surface, noting that early attention can be decisive when a condition escalates quickly.
