The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is currently investigating a taxi driver who was allegedly charging an “airport meter rate” to passengers, following a video that went viral on social media.
LTFRB spokesperson Celine Pialago confirmed on Monday, Dec. 18, that the agency is scrutinizing the authenticity of the video.
In the video, an associate of the taxi driver is seen handing over a laminated bond paper listing the rates. These rates, termed as “airport meter rate,” vary from P9,700 to P13,500 per person, depending on the destination. The minimum charge for Metro Manila travel is P9,700, while the highest rate, at P13,500, is for trips to Terminal 4.
The LTFRB has expressed its commitment to holding taxi operators and drivers accountable for any violations of public transportation regulations. “Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III assures the public that the LTFRB remains vigilant in promptly addressing such violations and implementing necessary actions to ensure the quality of public transportation services,” Pialago stated.
The investigation will focus on the legitimacy of the video and whether the charges displayed are authorized. The “Airport Accredited Regular Taxi Service Meter Rate” sign, as shown in the video, raises questions about the pricing standards for airport taxis and the regulation of such charges.
